Laura Ku

From: Chicago
Studied: Psychology at UC Berkeley
Currently doing: Product Management
Why did you decide to get involved with TAP and what was your first event?
I originally got involved to see what the Taiwanese Community was up to. My first event was the Halloween Tappy Hour in 2012
Why is TAP important to you and why do you continue to be so active?
TAP lets me keep in touch with my Taiwanese roots, and the community has been very welcoming. It’s full of people who are willing to give their time to make the Taiwanese community a vibrant place to be.
How has TAP benefited you the most?
I’ve met a lot of awesome people through TAP, who have inspired me to try out different things.
What was your favorite TAP event this year and why?
Masquerade Ball was one of the most fun events to plan and put on. The turnout was great and everyone turning up in fancy dress + masks was awesome.
What type of events would you like to see TAP do in the future?
Board Game nights, API issues forums, and more long running volunteer events.
What do you like to do outside of TAP?
I really enjoy swing dancing, reading, pursuing amazing food, traveling, board games, tech news, and discovering all the things SF has to offer.
What is your favorite Taiwanese food and what is your favorite part of Taiwan?
It’s hard to pick just one but I love stinky tofu and just about any rice dish. Ok, maybe also hand pulled noodle dishes… Food is awesome. My favorite part of Taiwan is really Taipei.
Where would you like to see TAP in the future?
I’d like to see it take on more political and social issues.
How would you recommend newer TAP members get involved?
Join a committee. It’s really the fastest way to get to know everyone as well as keeping up with what is going on.

When: Saturday, May 18, 2013 2:30pm – 5:30pm
Where: Turk and Larkin, San Francisco, CA

Runway Couturier is partnering with AsianWeek Foundation this year to host a Runway Show during the 9th Annual Asian Heritage Street Celebration (AHSC). Each year, AHSC has a Faces of Asia parade where delegates from different organizations representing different cultures dress up and parade in their ethnic costumes (this year TAP is representing the Taiwanese contingent). This runway show will be a debut of the Runway Couturier fashion designers who won a competition earlier in the year for the honor to participate in the runway. Each of the fashion designers will create couture inspired by one of the Faces of Asia contingent (including one inspired by the Taiwanese costumes).

The Need: 10 -20 volunters as front and back of house staff (no prior experience needed)
*10-15 Directors – help models with getting ready to walk, and help with the clothes
*2-5 Front of House – greet the guests, let people know no cellphones are allowed, and be charming and friendly

Please note:
*This event is limited as far as the number of attendees. Priority will be given to TAP members first so please become a member if you aren’t already. You can become a member by following online directions here: http://tap-sf.org/membership/ This event is FREE for both members and non-members.

**Please email Diny Huang at diny.huang@tap-sf.org to confirm your attendance for this event. Responding via this event page only does NOT confirm your attendance.

–
About the AHSC: The AHSC is an annual festival celebration organized by AsianWeek Foundation, which celebrates Asian Pacific American heritage month; it is the largest pan-Asian street fair in the nation. This year’s event will be bigger and better than ever, featuring a Faces of Asia Cultural Procession, Arts and Crafts World Market, Healthy Living Pavilion, martial art performances, free film screenings, cooking demos, and some of the Bay Area’s favorite food trucks. This year, the Asian Americans for Community Outreach (AACO) and Taiwanese American Professionals, SF Chapter (TAP-SF) are leading the volunteer management for the event.

Ever wonder why our elders are always telling us to drink hot water, or why there’s ginger in almost every Chinese dish? As Taiwanese Americans, we are fortunate enough to have been raised with traditional diets, but most of us eat modern diets that may not serve us. With our busy lifestyles, too many people are skipping breakfast and eating at our desks. We want all TAP members to be healthy and get the most out of our diets!

Where: Union Square, San Francisco

http://tafestival.org/2013/

The 21st Taiwanese American Cultural Festival will be held on Saturday, May 11th, 2013 at Union Square in San Francisco. At the festival, attendees will have the opportunity to experience a characteristic element of Taiwan – the “night market”, learn more about Taiwan’s history and Taiwanese Americans in the Bay Area, as well as enjoy Taiwanese delicacies. On the stage, there will be performances presented by the Dance Department of the National Taiwan University of Arts and local Taiwanese American musicians, including the alternative rock band, Johnny Hi-Fi and more.

Last year, more than 5,000 visitors attended the festival. We were honored to have distinguished guests, including Jackie Speier, US Congresswoman; David Chiu, President of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors; and Gavin Newsom, former Mayor of San Francisco and current California State Lieutenant Governor.

The exhibitions at the festival will include disply of Taiwanese glove puppets (people figurines) as well as video clips and live performance of Taiwanese Glove Puppet Show (present the Lunar/ Eastern Zodiac Story), Taiwanese arts and crafts, games with prizes, visual displays to illustrate Taiwanese technology, as well as a marketplace with orchids from Taiwan. In addition, people should not leave the festival without tasting traditional Taiwanese food and learning about the beautiful tourist attractions in Taiwan.

From: San Francisco, CA

Studied: Economics at UCLA

Currently: working at Rackspace

-Why did you decide to get involved with TAP and what was your first event?

I first got involved with TAP after I had just moved back to SF in 2011. I wanted to meet new people and keep busy while I was looking for a job.

-Why is TAP important to you and why do you continue to be so active?

It’s a good community and there’s always something going on.

-How has TAP benefited you the most?

I met a cool network of people.

-What was your favorite TAP event this year and why?

The Meals on Wheels Star Chefs and Vitners Gala. Helping a good cause, amazing free food, and a chance to dress up. What more can you ask for in an event .

-What type of events would you like to see TAP do in the future?

TAP’s been doing a good job with having a variety of events. Maybe more active things, like rock climbing or something.

-What do you like to do outside of TAP?

I’m also involved with Hyphen magazine. Outside of that, I enjoy traveling (though I dislike plane rides), and I like to run along the Marina Green.

-What is your favorite Taiwanese food and what is your favorite part of Taiwan?

Beef noodle soup, but I’ve always wanted to try the rice covered sausages they had in the night market. I’ve only been to Taipei..shrimp fishing was fun.

-Where would you like to see TAP in the future?

I’d like to see TAP be a top-choice org for people in the Asian/ Asian American community to join. I’m not Taiwanese, so I think there’s definitely value in it for even people who aren’t Taiwanese.

-How would you recommend newer TAP members get involved?

I might be a bit biased, but CS events! You get to help others, be productive, and it automatically gives you something to bond over with everyone else at the event.
